Remember those Southwest Airlines commercials where someone would do or say something embarrassing and the narrator would ask, “Wanna get away?” Yeah, that’s Texas governor Greg Abbott today. For those who weren’t paying attention, the Houston Astros were leading the Kansas City Royals by a score of 6-2 in the 8th inning in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. Blowing a four run lead with six outs left isn’t impossible. It’s pretty unusual, but they do happen. So Abbott, prematurely, congratulated the Astros on winning the series. His tweet read “Congrats to the Astros on advancing to the ALCS! Hoping for an all-Texas ALCS. Looking at you, Rangers.” Yeah, I thought it was over too. I’ll admit it. Still, it’s the top of the 8th inning. Assuming the Astros didn’t completely implode like they did, the game would have probably been over in a half hour. What was the rush? I could understand if they were up, say, 16-3. Yeah, at that point I think it’s safe to say that NO team is going to allow 13 runs before getting six defensive outs. But four runs? It’s been done before. We’re also talking about the same city that blew a 35-3 lead in the third quarter of an NFL playoff game 22 years ago (Oilers/Bills in January 1993- “The Comeback”). It would have been fascinating to see who this schmuck would have rooted for had the Astros and Rangers met in the ALCS. By the way, Abbott is getting roasted unmercifully for the ill-advised tweet that has since been deleted. Not since John Connolly has a Texas governor taken bullets like this. The good news for Greg is that the ‘Stros are going to be good for years, so he’ll have many more opportunities to get it right. But until then, he’s the BUM of the Week.
This week's loser is Texas governor, Greg Abbott
