This week's loser is South Carolina defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney.
Unless Jadeveon Clowney holds up a liquor store or gets busted for drugs between now and May, he will be a top-three pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He's leaving college early, which is fine. I have no problem with him declaring for the draft early, he's arguably the best defensive player in the country and he has earned the right to go high in this draft. That didn't stop him from making himself sound like a jackass on the way out the door. Clowney said yesterday that he would have stayed in college another year if he was being, umm....what's a good way to put this? Ummm....financially compensated. "Having to take care of my family, it would have made a difference if I'd have gotten paid," he said. "If I would have had the chance to take care of my family through college, I would have probably stayed in college." Okay, I have no problem with that. He wants to make money to support his family. He could even say that with a smile and pass it off as joke, no big deal. But when pressed to elaborate, he came right out and said that college athletes should get paid. "I think so," he said. "They are selling our jerseys with our numbers and making money off of ticket sales, so I think college athletes should get paid." Yeah....that's where we disagree. You may be an athlete, but you're still a student of the University of South Carolina. That's why scholarships exist, bro. They give you a free ride to get an education when you really spend your time playing football, getting drunk, screwing cheerleaders and playing video games. Let's be honest, most college athletes don't go to class. Whatever, it's his scholarship. How he chooses to spend his college experience is his business. But, you want to do all of the aforementioned activities on an athletic scholarship, AND get paid for it? No way, that's a little too extreme. Granted, most colleges give these kids money under the table, but no college is going to hand student athletes a check just because they sold some tickets. On that note- if you've never seen the movie Blue Chips with Nick Nolte and Shaq, watch it. You won't regret it. Clowney is a great player, he'll be an instant millionaire very shortly, but he's pissed because he wasn't paid by the NCAA. But I have something for Clowney that he can take to the bank- he's the BUM of the Week.
"Coach, I ain't playin' another down until you give me a hund'ed..."
