Scotty’s BUM of the Week returns, and this week a local sports figure takes home the honors. I have to preface this week’s edition by saying that I like Shawn Thornton a lot. He’s a tough, hard nosed player and a good teammate. He’s been an outstanding citizen during his time in Boston and he has become the face of the renaissance of the Big Bad Bruins. But Shawn Thornton is what he is….an enforcer. Every team in the NHL has one, and he is the guy who impacts the game with his physicality. His presence during the regular season is invaluable, but during the postseason he becomes less of a factor. Why? There’s no fighting in the NHL playoffs, let alone senseless mind games which give the opposing team added motivation. Thornton was guilty of such hi jinx in Game 5 of the Eastern Semis against hated Montreal. With less than a minute to go in the third period and with the Bruins on the verge of taking a 3-2 lead in the series, Thornton sprayed water in the face of Habs defenceman P.K. Subban. Whether it collectively pissed of the entire Canadiens team or not, the Habs outplayed Boston in Games 6 and 7 and moved on the the Eastern Conference Finals against the Rangers. No matter what Thornton’s intentions were, it was not the time or the place for it. The playoffs are all about winning games and raising the Cup. If bad blood boils in the playoffs (and it does), you take names and numbers, make a mental note, and then do what you gatta do in the regular season. Shawn is a veteran of two Stanley Cup winning teams (2007, 2011). He should know this more than anyone. All that incident did was give Montreal extra incentive to skate circles around the Bruins the last two games, which they did. And by the way….Thornton’s line produced nothing. If you’re going to act like a punk, you had better back it up with your play. Everyone has brain cramps from time to time, and this was certainly one of them. Donald Sterling is spared, because Shawn Thornton is the BUM of the Week.
This week’s loser is Bruins forward, Shawn Thornton
